Swami Shuddhatmananda

Just as yoga was being practiced for thousands of years in the Indus Valley before the foundational Yoga Sutra was written, tao was being practiced for thousands of years in China before the foundational Tao Te Ching was written. The parallels between these two practical and beautiful philosophies are remarkable. The essence of both the Kriya Yoga and the Tao teachings is in helping all human beings to understand their true nature and live life accordingly.

Swami Shuddhatmananda Giri was born in Iowa, USA in 1959 as Penny Boekhoff, and was known as Penny Hendrix after her marriage. She was initiated into Kriya Yoga in 2003 in Austin, Texas, USA. She lived a householder’s life and had a career in Information Technology until her husband of 33 years passed away in 2014. After wrapping up her affairs in 2015, she took vanaprastha initiation, and became the first resident of the newly-founded Temple of Compassion Ashram in Burton, Texas. Four years later, she took sanyasa to become a monk in the Kriya Yoga lineage of Shri Paramahamsa Hariharananda and Shri Paramahamsa Prajnanananda.
