Cleansing the mirror of my mind with the pollen dust from the lotus feet of Shri Guru-preceptor, I describe the unblemished, untainted, and pure glory of Lord Rama, which bestows the four fruits. Being fully aware that I am devoid of intelligence, I remember Lord Hanuman, the son of Pavana (the wind god), with full concentration. Please give me strength, intelligence, and spiritual knowledge and remove all affliction, blemishes, perversions, and impurities (bikāra) that cause pain (kalesa).
Verse 1
O my Lord Hanuman, the ocean of knowledge and virtues, may you be victorious. O chief amongst the kapis, famous across the three planes of existence (lokas — the earth, heaven, and the lower planes), you are everywhere the illuminator; may you be victorious.
Verse 2
You are the trusted and divine messenger of Lord Rama. You are the abode or repository of incomparable strength. You are known by the names Anjaniputra (son of Anjana) and Pavanasuta (son of Pavana).
Verse 3
O Great Hero, your body is as sturdy as a thunderbolt (vajra-angi). You are valiant and brave. You are the destroyer of vile intellect, and you are the companion of one with pure intellect.
Verse 4
Your complexion is like molten gold, and you are resplendent in your handsome form and pretty dress. You wear kundalas (small earrings worn in old times by male Hindus) in your ears, and your hair is curly.
Verse 5
In your hands you hold a lightning bolt [or in your hand, which is like a thunderbolt]. You carry a victory flag, and the sacred thread (yajnopavita) made of munja grass (saccharum munja, saccharum verciliaris) adorns your shoulder.
Verse 6
O embodiment of Shiva [or son of Vayu carrying the power of Shiva], You offer delight and comfort and pride to Keshari as his child. Because of your aura, luster, majesty, and great sway, you are revered and propitiated across the universe.
Verse 7
You are the repository of learning, virtuous and fully accomplished. You are extremely intelligent. You are always eager to carry out Lord Rama’s behests.
Verse 8
You delight in listening to the acts of Lord Rama [in the Ramayana]. Lord Rama, Shri Lakshmana, and Mother Sita reside in your mind.
Verse 9
You assumed an extremely diminutive form and appeared to Mother Sita. You assumed a very large, awesome, and terrifying form and burned the city of Lanka.
Verse 10
You assumed a frightening form and destroyed the asuras [in the army of Ravana]. You carried out all the tasks of Lord Rama [assigned to you with great skill].
Verse 11
You brought the sanjivani, the lifesaving herb [from Dronagiri in the Himalayas], and restored Shri Lakshmana back to life. Out of elation Shri Raghuvira (Lord Rama) embraced you with a heart full of joy.
Verse 12
Shri Raghupati (Lord Rama, the chief descendant of King Raghu) praised you profusely, saying, “You are as dear to me as my own brother Shri Bharata.”
Verse 13
“Thousands of living beings are chanting the hymns of your glories.” Saying this, Lord Rama (Shri Pati), embraced him again.
Verse 14
The great saints like Sanaka and his brothers, Lord Brahma, the great sages (munishas), Narada, Mother Saraswati (Sarada), along with Ahisha (Ananta or Shesha, the lord of the serpents,) [fail to describe your glory].
Verse 15
The lord of death (Yama), the lord of wealth (Kubera), and the presiding deities of different directions have been vying with one another to offer homage to your glories. How can a mere poet, scholar, or singer adequately express your glories?
Verse 16
You did Sugriva a great favor by helping him to meet Lord Rama and bestowing on him the royal throne [the kingdom of Kishkindha].
Verse 17
Your mantra (advice and counseling) was accepted by Vibhishana. As a result, he became the king of Lanka. The whole universe knows this.
Verse 18
On your own you dashed upon the sun, Surya, which is a fabulous distance away, thinking it to be a sweet, luscious fruit.
Verse 19
O Lord, placing the signet ring given to you by Lord Rama in your mouth, you leaped across the ocean. There is no wonder here.
Verse 20
All difficult, unattainable, and burdensome tasks in the world are easily attainable with your kind grace.
Verse 21
You are the doorkeeper and the sentry who protects the door to Lord Rama’s court. Without your permission nobody can enter the abode of Lord Rama.
Verse 22
All comforts and pleasure of the world lie at your holy feet. In your refuge a sadhaka obtains all the divine pleasures and feels fearless under your benign protection.
Verse 23
You alone are fit to carry out your valor. When you release your thunderous call after remembering your powers, the three worlds tremble with fear.
Verse 24
O Mahavira! The ghosts (bhūta), the evil spirits, and evil forces (pisāca or pishācha) do not come near those who mention your great name.
Verse 25
All diseases and ailments are destroyed. All pain and suffering are removed when one incessantly chants your holy name bīrā (brave) Hanuman.
Verse 26
Those who continuously contemplate upon Lord Hanuman in their hearts in their thoughts, words, and actions are extricated from all their adversities.
Verse 27
All who hail Lord Rama as the Supreme God and a king with penance (tapas) you make all their difficult tasks easy.
Verse 28
And whoever comes to you with any desire and with faith and sincerity, their wish is fulfilled beyond limits [literally, “they obtain unlimited fruit of the wish”]. He or she alone will secure the imperishable fruit of human life.
Verse 29
Through the four periods of time (yugas), your magnificent glory is acclaimed far and wide. Your fame is radiantly acclaimed all over the cosmos.
Verse 30
You are the protector of the sadhus (good and noble people, ascetics, mendicants) and saints. You are the destroyer of the asuras and as dear as a son to Lord Rama.
Verse 31
You can grant anyone the eight forms of yogic attainments (ashta siddhi) and the nine forms of divine treasures (nava nidhi). This boon has been conferred upon you by Mother Sita (Janaki).
Verse 32
You possess the treasure of devotion to Lord Rama (Shri Rama’s bhakti, rāma rasāyana). In all your incarnations you are respectfully the most dedicated disciple and servant of Lord Rama (Shri Raghupati).
Verse 33
Through hymns sung with devotion dedicated to you, a devotee can find Lord Rama and become free from all sufferings accumulated life after life.
Verse 34
(As a result of devotion to you), after death a devotee goes to Lord Rama’s abode (raghuvara pura). Wherever that person is reborn, he is known as the Lord’s devotee (haribhakta).
Verse 35
One need not entertain any other deity for propitiation; devotion to Lord Hanuman can provide all happiness.
Verse 36
One is freed from all suffering and misfortune if he or she remembers and adores Lord Hanuman as the mighty hero.
Verse 37
Glory to you, hail to you, and adoration to you, O Lord Hanuman, you are the master of the senses. May you shower your grace lovingly as my supreme guru-preceptor.
Verse 38
Life is action. Ordinary people do not understand the value of life, so they react. Reactionary action is dangerous and has a harmful effect on the person and others too. When one acts, the result is either bondage or purification that leads to liberation.
Verse 39
One who reads this Hanuman Chalisa obtains siddhi (spiritual accomplishment, liberation). Lord Shiva himself bears witness to this statement.
Verse 40
Tulasi Das is always a devotee and servant of Lord Hari. O Lord, make my heart your abode.
